Get Outside and Take a Walk
Get outside and take a walk. These words sound so simple. But, like anything else, taking things one step at a time is the key to healthy aging.
Walking outside is known to offer a number of health benefits. From lowering blood pressure to reducing aches and pains, the time spent outdoors is as good for the body as it is for the mind.
For some though, getting outside and taking that walk can be a challenge. With mobility issues, the simple act of getting our things together and going outdoors can be a daunting one. A little help can go a long way. But, walks don’t need to be long. They can, however, certainly be something that maximizes time spent outdoors. Walking to a nearby park, just to sit and take it all in, can be a refreshing and well-deserved moment.
The Motivo Tour was designed to maximize feelings of independence. With how it thoughtfully integrates accessible storage, it’s important to be able to bring along any personal needs that add to the level of personal comfort - a hat, a phone, a purse or a wallet.
While out for a walk, breathing fresh air can do more than limit boredom and stave off complacency, it can re-energize the human spirit. There are many factors that come into play when considering the advantages of spending a little more time outside, but three key benefits stand out:
1) A natural connection. Being outside provides a connection to nature that is lost when too much time is spent inside the home. As mentioned in the Harvard Women's Health Watch, under the right circumstances, just 10 to 15 minutes of sun on the arms and legs a few times a week can generate nearly all the vitamin D we need.
2) A sense of community. Walking with someone, a friend or family member, can provide a compassionate moment of kinship and love to treasure.
3) A personal validation. Every moment enjoyed with independence is an opportunity for hope and inspiration. This can counterbalance the trepidation or worry for physical decline and restore a profound sense of pride.
After all, it’s all about taking things one step at a time.
